Joint injections are typically done to relieve the pain from arthritis or swelling and inflammation of a specific joint. Depending on the joint(s) involved the injection may take place in the office under ultrasound guidance, or in the surgery center under x-ray guidance. Steroid injections typically will involve both a steroid and a local anesthetic. You will notice the effects of the steroid 3-5 days after the injection and the effects will continue to grow, meaning your pain will continue to get less over the 2-3 weeks after the procedure. Once this maximal effect is reached, the effects may last from weeks to months after the injection.
